Alcohol disturbs the sleep of women
A study conducted by a team of researchers from the University of Michigan (USA) is to dispel the widespread popular belief that the drinking of alcohol before sleep restful night. If it's true that can help fall asleep faster, safer is another effect that disturbs the sleep quality. Specifically, if you drink a bit 'too much, you get an increase in nighttime awakenings. This is a study of 93 teens, healthy (59 women and 34 men) who were divided into two groups: one group drank alcohol and another a placebo. Their sleep was also monitored. A relevant fact is that for the same blood alcohol, alcohol disturbs sleep more women than men. The total sleep time in the group of women who had been drinking alcohol was reduced to 19 minutes of sleep efficiency decreased by 4%, there is was also an increase of 15 minutes of time spent awake during the night.
The study was conducted by the team of Prof. Arendt, and is being published on Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research.
